A portafilter is designed to hold ground coffee beans for making espresso and is attached to a grouphead, like the E61 grouphead, on an espresso machine to produce espresso. The portafilter consists of a metal attachment head, an opening to accept filter baskets, and a handle.
The E61 grouphead is a type of espresso machine grouphead that was first created by Giuseppe and Bruno Gaggia in 1961. It is widely used in espresso machines today, due to its strong construction and ability to maintain a consistent temperature. The E61 grouphead is known for its pre-infusion feature, which slowly and evenly saturates the coffee grounds before the full extraction begins.
Giuseppe and Bruno Gaggia were the inventors of the modern espresso machine. Giuseppe Gaggia was an Italian-born restaurateur and coffee shop owner who first developed and patented the lever-operated espresso machine in 1938. His son, Bruno Gaggia, helped to refine the invention and later founded the Gaggia company in 1947. The Gaggia company continues to manufacture espresso machines to this day.
Portafilters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the type of espresso machine and the type of espresso being made. Generally, the two most common types of portafilters are the single shot.
- Single Shot: A single shot portafilter is used to make a single shot of espresso. This type of portafilter has a single chamber that holds the ground coffee, as well as a spout to dispense the espresso.
- Double Shot: A double shot portafilter is used to make two shots of espresso at once. This type of portafilter has two chambers that each hold the ground coffee, as well as two spouts to dispense the espresso.
Portafilters come in 3 versions including
- 2 spout
- 1 spout
- Naked (I like the naked one)
Importance Of Portafilters
Portafilters are an important part of the espresso-making process because they allow for precise control over the amount of coffee being used and the extraction of the full flavor of the coffee. By using a portafilter to measure and pack the coffee, the espresso is more consistent and the flavor of the espresso is more intense.
Portafilters also play an important role in the steaming process. By using a portafilter, the espresso is forced through the coffee grounds and the steaming process is more efficient. This allows for a more consistent and intense flavor in the espresso.
What Size Portafilters are there?
The most common sizes of portafilters are 54mm and 58mm, but they can range between 40mm to 58mm depending on the espresso machine. Most of the commercial grade machines use either a 54mm or a 58mm, which is more common.
Below are some various size portafilters used
- Breville Barista Express Impress — 54mm
- La Marzocco Strada — 58mm
- Profitec 400 — 58mm
- Rocket Espresso Appartamento – 58mm
- Flair Espresso Signature Espresso Maker — 40mm
Most Espresso machines dictate the size of the portafilter, although some companies have added adapters to accept other sizes. For instance the Dalla Corte espresso machines come standard using a 54mm portafilter, but have an adapter that also allows a 58mm portafilter to be used.
NOTE: A rule of thumb: the smaller the diameter of the portafilter, the less flexibility you have on the amount of coffee grounds you can use. For instance on a smaller portafilter, you have less flexibility to increase the amount of coffee because the coffee puck becomes too tall, making it harder to pull good espresso shots.
What Size Portafilter Baskets are there?
Portafilter baskets come in various metric sizes based on the gram weight or dose size of the coffee grinds, but are usually referred to as single, double or triple shot filter baskets.
- Single Shot Baskets — Single shot baskets typically hold 7-10 grams of coffee. These baskets are designed as the name implies for single shots of espresso.
- Double Shot Baskets — Double shot baskets typically are designed to hold between 16-22 grams of coffee. Most of your commercial grade machines use the double shot as standard.
Pullman, who make excellent filter baskets and offer 4 size options including 17-19, 19-22, 22-25 and 25-28. All their filter baskets come with 876 holes, which Pullman’s says is optimal for filtering coffee. - Triple Shot Baskets — Triple shot baskets are for those wanting a lot of caffeine in their shot, but honestly you’re better off staying away from these filter baskets as they tend to be harder to get the proper consistency.
Most cafes and coffee houses use double shot baskets for their espressos and may use a double spout or naked portafilter setup.
NOTE: When switching filter basket sizes, you will most likely have to change your grind setting to accommodate the different size baskets.
Spouted vs Naked Portafilters
As stated earlier, portafilters come in either spouted (one or two spouts) or naked (no spouts aka bottomless portafilters). Many instagram, TikTok, and YouTube accounts like to showcase videos using naked portafilters because the coffee pour looks amazing as the coffee pours out. Naked portafilters also show channeling issues that spouted ones hide.
Here is a great example of a single, double and bottomless portafilter Instagram post.
Two spout portafilters are pretty helpful when making single shot espresso for 2. Each funnel spout can be poured into a separate espresso cup, making 2 espresso shots in one pour.
Single Spout and Naked Portafilters usually are setup to make a double shot espresso because most cafes use a double shot filter.
NOTE: Recently a new type of portafilter was released at the end of 2022 called the Unfilter Portafilter by Webber Workshop. It doesn’t use puck filters and is made from a single piece of stainless steel.
Q: Who makes the most popular portafilters
The most popular portafilters available today are typically made by the Italian espresso machine companies La Marzocco and Nuova Simonelli. These portafilters are designed to be durable and to provide a good extraction for making espresso drinks.
The most popular portafilter manufacturer is likely La Marzocco, based in Florence, Italy. They have been producing some of the highest quality commercial coffee equipment since 1927. Their portafilters are made from high quality stainless steel and are designed to be durable and consistent.
Q: What is the difference between a single shot and a double shot portafilter?
The difference between a single shot and a double shot portafilter is that a single shot portafilter has a single chamber that holds the ground coffee, as well as a spout to dispense the espresso, while a double shot portafilter has two chambers that each hold the ground coffee, as well as two spouts to dispense the espresso.
Q: How do I know which portafilter to use?
The type of portafilter you should use depends on the type of espresso machine and the type of espresso you are making. Generally, a single shot portafilter is used for a single shot of espresso, and a double shot portafilter is used for two shots of espresso.
